Louis Decimus
Louis Decimus (1945–2022) was a noted American artist and educator. He is recognized for his vibrant paintings and innovative sculptures that reflect the complexities of African American identity and culture. Decimus was born on July 12, 1945, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He showed an early talent for art, which he later pursued academically at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Decimus’s artistic practice was diverse, encompassing painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His work is characterized by rich colors, bold forms, and intricate patterns. He often explored themes of heritage, community, and the African diaspora. He drew inspiration from the cultural richness of his Southern roots and the dynamic art movements of the 20th century. In addition to his paintings, Decimus was mainly known for his striking sculptures, which often incorporated found objects and materials that spoke to the lived experiences of African Americans.
