Sam Gilliam

Sam Gilliam (1933-2022) was a groundbreaking American artist renowned for his innovative contributions to abstract painting and his pioneering use of color and form. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Gilliam emerged as a key figure in the Washington Color school, known for his experimental techniques that transformed the traditional notion of painting. In the 1960s, Gilliam was best known for his “drape’ paintings, where he  suspended  canvases from the wall or ceiling, creating a three-dimensional effect that engaged viewers in new ways. His vibrant use of color and  dynamic compositions challenged the boundaries of painting, allowing for a more immersive experience. The exploration of the materiality of paint and its relationship to space led Gilliam to incorporate paper into his artistic practice, creating stunning works that combined elements of painting, drawing, and collage. Many of  Giliam’s works on paper often feature bold, gestural brushstrokes and a vibrant colorful palette that reflects his distinctive style. He has been  highly acclaimed for  his  innovative printmaking techniques which have included  screen printing, lithography, and etching.
